Beyond Medicine interview winner

In July 2011, Future Morph set up a competition for students to develop their own interview with healthcare or medical science staff. The winner was Amy Hughes from Rushcliffe School in Nottingham.

There were over 100 entries for this competition from a variety of secondary schools across the UK. The competition was open to students aged 11-16 years who had to develop their own interview where they planned a set of 10 questions to ask their choice of healthcare or medical science staff.

To enter, students simply had to tell us who they would interview, where the interview would take place, and which 10 questions they would ask. The winning student was then given the chance to ask their questions directly to their chosen interviewee, and their interview will be included in our new Beyond Medicine section on the Future Morph website.

The interview questions were marked depending on whether they included information from the following areas:

  • Qualifications required for the job
  • Essential training
  • Equipment used for the job
  • Job rating
  • Salary
  • Work/life balance

Amy's interview was the clear winner including all of these points and she was invited, along with her teacher Mr Richard White, to carry out her interview with a Clinical Perfusion Scientist at the Trent Cardiac Centre in Nottingham. Clinical Perfusion Scientists are in charge of operating the heart lung machines during open heart surgery. You can find out more about this profession here.

The interview was filmed by Classroom Medics who are currently filming a number of interviews with healthcare professionals to be included in Future Morph's new Beyond Medicine theme.

Beyond Medicine is one of the new themes currently being developed that will highlight the range and variety of job roles within the field of medicine for those who want to help people but not necessarily as a doctor. Within this new theme, the latest media stories will be combined with interactive games and career profiles to help young people to find out about the range of careers availablAmy & certificatee to them and the progression route options they will need to follow. Keep an eye on Future Morph or sign up to our e-newsletter to keep up to date on when Beyond Medicine will be launching.

Amy did a superb job on the day and we can't wait to see her interview on the site!

Amy's teacher, Richard White said "Thank you for providing us with this great STEM opportunity. Our students have really enjoyed finding out about the different careers that are available through medicine and as a biology teacher it has been great to get students talking about medical careers other than being a doctor, dentist or physiotherapist. This is definitely an activity that I will continue to use in the future."
